Orengo emphasized the importance of stability for public service employees, arguing that a system based on contracts would be unacceptable in a country that values order and continuity.
He also addressed the ongoing doctors’ strike, insisting that the government should honor the existing agreement with the doctors’ union and fulfill the negotiated salaries for intern doctors.
The governor reassured Siaya residents that the county’s healthcare services remain largely unaffected by the strike, as most doctors are employed by the county government rather than the Ministry of Health.
Orengo’s comments come amid mounting criticism of CS Kuria’s proposal to convert all public service positions to contractual terms.
CS Kuria’s proposal, unveiled during a press conference in Nairobi, has drawn widespread backlash.
Kuria argued that only one million public servants consume half of the country’s tax revenues, leaving the remaining half for the rest of the population.
