Two employees of Kenya Airways (KQ) have been arrested in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, for missing customs documentation on valuable cargo.

KQ’s CEO, Allan Kilavuka, confirmed the arrests and stated that the employees were taken into custody by the Military Intelligence Unit, despite a court order that should have prevented their detention.

Kilavuka argues that the arrest was unjustified because the cargo in question had not been accepted or transported by KQ due to incomplete documentation.

He expressed concern about the employees being held in a military facility and denied communication, even after the court ordered their release.

On April 23, 2024, Kenyan embassy officials and a few KQ staff were allowed brief visits with the detained employees.

Kilavuka also noted that the shipment was still undergoing clearance in the baggage section when the security team intervened and accused KQ of transporting cargo without customs clearance.

Despite the court’s order for the release of the employees, they remain in detention, and Kilavuka’s attempts to explain that KQ had not accepted the cargo due to incomplete documentation have been unsuccessful.
