The launch of The Connect Academy was announced during the Connected Africa Summit 2024, where Safaricom chief consumer business officer Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi emphasized the company’s commitment to building strong connectivity infrastructure in the region.
The academy supports the ICT Authority’s plans to develop extensive fibre networks, establish open Wi-Fi hotspots, and create digital village smart hubs.
As part of the Presidential DigiTalent Programme, the academy focuses on skill development, ICT innovations, training, certification, and mentorship for participants.
Safaricom’s goal is to develop a skilled workforce for both public and private sectors in collaboration with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).
Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi noted that the program aims to bridge the tech industry’s skills gap by training 10,000 fibre optic technicians over five years, creating employment and career opportunities for Kenyan youth who may lack higher education. The academy will begin its first cohort of 200 trainees in May.
In addition, Safaricom has announced internship opportunities for young graduates for the years 2024/2025.
