In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…

  • President William Ruto returned to Kenya from Switzerland using Kenya Airways, emphasizing his commitment to austerity measures, after previously facing criticism for using a private jet on a US trip.
  • Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was absent from the welcoming delegation, highlighting ongoing tensions between him and the President’s close associates.

President William Ruto returned to Kenya on Monday, June 17, from Switzerland, arriving on a Kenya Airways (KQ) flight.

Prior to this, the President had traveled to Italy and Switzerland by unidentified means before deciding to fly back with the national carrier.

This decision to use Kenya Airways aligns with President Ruto’s advocacy for government austerity measures aimed at reducing national debt.

In May, the President faced criticism for using a private jet for his five-day visit to the United States, a trip reportedly costing Ksh71 million. He later clarified that the jet was a gift from friends of Kenya, which influenced his choice.

Upon his arrival, President Ruto was welcomed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot.

Notably absent from the welcoming delegation was Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, amidst ongoing rumors of a rift between him and President Ruto.

The Deputy President has expressed frustrations, accusing those close to the President of attempting to undermine his authority.

“There are some people who are friends with the President who want to be my boss. Just because you are the President’s friend you want to become my boss?” Gachagua complained recently.

Interestingly, DP Gachagua had been part of the entourage that saw President Ruto off as he departed for the G7 summit in Italy on Thursday, June 13.
