President William Ruto, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, has made significant promotions and appointments within the military hierarchy. 

Lieutenant General Charles Muriu Kahariri has been elevated to the rank of General and entrusted with the pivotal role of Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF). 

Additionally, Major General John Mugaravai Ornenda has been promoted to Lieutenant General and designated as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces.

Prior to his new role, Lieutenant General Ornenda served as the Kenya Air Force Commander.

The appointment of General Kahariri follows the unfortunate demise of General Francis Ogolla, who lost his life in a helicopter crash alongside nine other military officers two weeks ago.

President Ruto has further enacted changes within the military leadership, appointing Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed as the Commander of the Kenya Air Force, and Major General Paul Owuor Otieno as the Commander of the Kenya Navy.

Following recommendations from the Defence Council chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, President Ruto has approved a series of promotions, postings, and appointments within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). 

Major General Thomas Njoroge Ng’ang’a has been tasked with serving at the National Defence University as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration and Finance. 

Additionally, Brigadier Peter Nyamu Githinji has been promoted to Major General and assigned as Senior Directing Staff, Air at the National Defence College.

Other notable appointments include Brigadier Jariani Kampare Gula as the Managing Director of the Kenya Meat Commission, Brigadier George Okumu as the Managing Director of Kenya Ordinance Factories Corporation and Food Processing Factory, and Brigadier Samuel Kosgel Kipkorir as the Deputy Commander of the Kenya Air Force.

It’s worth noting that the position of Chief of the Defence Forces rotates among generals from the three military formations: the Kenya Army, the Kenya Air Force, and the Kenya Navy. 

General Ogolla hailed from the Kenya Air Force, while General Kahariri represents the Kenya Navy in this rotation.
