Gov’t Initiates New Project To Address Housing Shortage Among KDF Officers

Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale took a significant step on Wednesday by commissioning a new housing project aimed at alleviating the accommodation shortage faced by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel. 

The project, located in the Kwa Mbuzi area of Laikipia County, will see the construction of 788 housing units.

Highlighting the severity of the housing deficit within the KDF, CS Duale disclosed that there is currently a shortage of 33,400 married quarters and 25,800 single quarters. 

The new development in Laikipia is part of a broader plan, as Duale mentioned, “In the 18th May 2024 I commissioned the construction of 952 units in Nakuru County.”

The initiative encompasses the construction of 3,069 housing units across five regions, including Nakuru (952), Gilgil (697), Mariakani (120), Nairobi (500), and Nanyuki (788).

The project primarily focuses on single quarters, totaling 2,089 units, while also providing 980 Married Quarters, comprising two and three-bedroom units to accommodate soldiers’ families.

Duale emphasized that this housing initiative will be realized through a strategic Public-Private Partnership (PPP), leveraging the strengths of both sectors to efficiently deliver high-quality housing solutions. 

He emphasized, “By fostering collaborative efforts and forging strong partnerships, the government aims to provide sustainable and supportive living environments for its defence personnel.”

The groundbreaking ceremony saw the presence of other key leaders, including Defence PS Patrick Mariru, General Officer Commanding Eastern Command Maj. Gen. Luka Kutto, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics Maj. Gen. David Ketter, alongside officers, servicemen, and contractors, underlining the government’s commitment to addressing the housing needs of its defence personnel.
