In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…

  • EACC raided Bomet County offices, arresting eight senior officials over the alleged embezzlement of Ksh. 1.5 billion.
  • The officials are accused of procurement fraud and diverting funds into their own companies, with further investigations ongoing.

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) raided the Bomet County offices, arresting eight senior officials over accusations of embezzling more than Ksh. 1.5 billion.

The raid extended to the homes of the officials, where valuable evidence was reportedly recovered.

EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed that those arrested include County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) and Chief Officers.

They are accused of abusing their positions to steal public funds through collusion, procurement fraud, and making payments for non-existent or substandard services.

Investigations revealed that Ksh. 1.2 billion was funneled into the officials’ own companies through fraudulent payments, while Ksh. 373 million was embezzled in the procurement of heavy road construction equipment in the 2022/2023 financial year.

The officials now face charges including conflict of interest, embezzlement, and abuse of office.

After being arrested, the suspects recorded statements at various EACC offices before being released.

EACC stated that the inquiry’s findings will determine further actions, including prosecution and recovery of any illegally acquired wealth.

This crackdown follows a recent probe launched by EACC in August, targeting a Ksh. 373 million graft involving county officials and private entities accused of fraudulent transactions.

During the investigation, the commission requested several financial and procurement documents to facilitate their inquiry.
