Kibwezi Member of Parliament Mwengi Muthusi, who voted in support of the controversial Finance Bill 2024, has joined the growing list of MPs who have faced backlash from their constituents.

Recently, Muthusi attended a funeral in his constituency, where the situation quickly escalated as angry residents expressed their displeasure.

The dramatic incident was captured on video and went viral on social media. In the video, the MP is seen seated in the front row, engaging in a heated exchange with a man a few meters away.

The tension peaked when another man approached Muthusi from the opposite direction and grabbed him. This sparked a scuffle as more people joined in, and the crowd rapidly grew.

The video shows the MP being led away by a man holding onto him, amidst the chaos.

This incident is part of a broader trend where Ruto-allied MPs who supported the Finance Bill 2024 are facing public outrage.

Several lawmakers who backed the bill have since retracted their support and apologized to Kenyans for not listening to their concerns.

However, the public’s anger remains unabated, especially towards MPs who ignored widespread calls to reject the bill.

The decision to support the Finance Bill 2024, despite public opposition, led to widespread protests that resulted in several deaths and injuries as police clashed with unarmed demonstrators.

President William Ruto eventually conceded and declined to sign the bill, but critics argue that this move came too late and at a significant cost, including loss of lives, destruction of property, and damage to the country’s image.

Initially, Ruto had rallied MPs to pass the bill, dismissing the mounting public opposition. Some MPs even claimed that photos of the protests shared online were doctored, and others alleged that the young protesters did not understand the bill’s content.

Despite these dismissals, the relentless protesters eventually succeeded in their efforts, raising questions about whom the MPs were truly representing and why the opposition to the bill was ignored until after the tragic consequences.
